I’ve been in the Tooth Gem industry for a long time, and when it comes to picking up Tooth Gems and placing them on the tooth, I’ve truly seen it all.
Some methods work. Some kind of work. And some make me question everything.
In this post, I’m ranking the four most common Tooth Gem applicators from worst to best based on real experience, so you can skip the trial and error and go straight to what actually works.
How I’m Ranking Each Method
Before we get into the list, let’s set the standard.
All of these methods are for picking up a clean Tooth Gem and placing it onto dental composite that is already on the tooth. I never recommend dipping a gem into composite and then placing it. We’re not doing that.
Here are the three things I look for in any applicator:
1. Single Use. Client safety and sanitation always come first. Your applicator should eliminate any risk of cross contamination.
2. Strong Grip. You never want to pick up a crystal or gold piece and have it fall off mid transfer. Your tool should hold onto the gem securely, especially when working with gold or diamonds.
3. Easy Release. This is where a lot of tools fail. Once the gem touches the composite, it should release easily and sit exactly where you place it. No sticking, no dragging, no fighting the applicator.
Now that we know what we’re looking for, let’s rank them.
#4 Dental Adhesive Tip Applicator
I truly don’t know why this one is still in circulation for Tooth Gem Techs.
It technically checks two boxes. It is single use and it has strong grip. But it completely fails when it comes to release.
This tool is designed for orthodontics to hold a bracket in place while it is being cured. The whole point is that it does not let go. That is the exact opposite of what we need for Tooth Gems.
If I had it my way, this one would quietly disappear from every Tooth Gem supply site.

#3 Standard Wax Tip Applicator
This is probably the most commonly used applicator, and I get why.
It is affordable, easy to find, and it does the job. It technically meets all three of my requirements. But it just does not stand out.
Where it falls short is grip. It works, but not as well as other options. And when there are better tools at a much lower cost, it is hard to justify this as your go to.

#2 Pic-n-Stic Applicator
If I had to choose one wax tip style applicator, this would be it.
This tool excels in all three categories. It has strong grip, clean release, and it is reliable even when working with heavier pieces like gold or diamonds.
It is more expensive than standard wax tips, but this is one of those situations where it is absolutely worth it. The last thing you want is to drop a gold charm during placement.
I always recommend keeping a pack on hand specifically for heavier designs. If you need to stock up, you can find them here: Disposable Applicators.

#1 Pointed Q Tip and Vaseline
Yes, really. A Q tip wins.
This method is simple, affordable, and incredibly reliable. All you need is a pointed Q tip and a bit of Vaseline.
It checks every box. It is single use, it grips well, and it releases exactly when and where you want it to. It is also the lowest cost option on this list.
I personally use this method for almost all crystal applications, and it has never failed me.
If you want to see exactly how I do it, you can watch this Instagram video.

What I Actually Use in Practice
In real life, I use a combination of the top two methods.
For most crystal applications, I reach for the Q tip method. It is quick, easy, and consistent.
For heavier pieces like gold, diamonds, or larger shaped crystals, I switch to the Pic-n-Stic. It gives me the extra grip I want when working with more valuable pieces.
If you are building your kit, I recommend having both on hand so you are ready for any type of application.
You can find the Pic-n-Stic on my site under Disposable Applicators.
Final Thoughts
There are a lot of tools out there, but not all of them are created with Tooth Gems in mind.
My goal is always to help you save time, avoid frustration, and use tools that actually support your work and your results.

I hope this saves you from a little trial and error and helps you feel more confident in your setup.
